Ibiza Ultra Team, an extreme strength test

On 28 April, Ibiza once again hosted the meeting place and important date on the athletics and running calendar, the Ibiza Ultra Team 2012. It is an extreme endurance athletic event split into three competitions that were simultaneously held; an ultra-endurance race that combines Trail Running, BTT mountain biking and swimming across open water.

In recent years there is a trend in competition organisation described as “Ultra”, where distances and levels far exceed the most important tests on the international circuit, such as the Iron Man, TNF Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, which are demanding marathons and raids in stages. Ibiza Ultra Team wants to become a major sporting event, as the design of the competition is perfectly adapted to the climatic and cultural landscape of the island of Ibiza, in which participants were treated to a unique environment along the race.

Ibiza Ultra Team 2012 consisted of three individual events in different locations in Ibiza and Formentera, with the final goal in the city of Ibiza. The athletes were able to compete individually in one of three disciplines and in teams with other participants for the two remaining tests. The most prominent participants in the competition included Miguel Indurain, Kiko Hervás, Martín Fiz
and Luis Moya.

The Trail Running competition departed from the village of San Antoni de Portmany. Runners travelled a mountainous 70 km path with great landscape diversity. The BTT mountain bike route covered a beautiful 100 km long road, through mountains and valleys in the municipality of Santa Eulàlia des Riu. Finally, the swim across open water started and finished on Ses Illetas
beach in Formentera. Participants were challenged to swim around the islet of S’Espalmador.

Aware of the importance that this type of sport is gaining, Ibiza wants to consolidate itself as a destination for adventure tourism. Its landscape and the Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures throughout the year are an excellent choice for any outdoor sport or sports events.
